Dromes of the World

 The California Hellriders wall (USA)

The next generation -Exceptional trickrider Doni Daniels, fearless beauty Sandra D., & ever daring Ian Daniels continue the show - following in Don Daniels Sr.’s footsteps. This drome was originally built by “Pappy” Boudreau (another motor drome family) in the ‘60s. Pappy’s signature was to put the riding surface boards on a diagonal (/) as opposed to straight upand down (l), and this drome is built that way. The Daniels family, as well as the Boudreaus are from Mass.  These guys put on an exceptional show, continuing to thrill audiences at bike meets and show attractions everywhere! They are at the Iron Horse Saloon (in Ormond Beach) during Bike Week & Biketoberfest - but no matter where they are, if you get a chance to see ‘em - don’t pass it up! You’ll never forget it!

Pitt’s todeswand (GERMANY)

Border Run 03

A huge combination drome, I had the priviledge of riding this drome in Munich for Oktoberfest in 1992. Sonny Pelaquin had ridden it also - as a young man - and had told me all about it; how wonderful it was!  The door opened out - so you could ride a bike up onto the stage from inside the “pit” of the drome! The woodwork was ornate - carved rails all the way up to the catwalks... just a beautiful building! When I rode there, the riders running the show were the Varanne brothers from France, and Sonja Stradamaans (‘scuse my spelling, Sonja) whose dad had the wall then..The Varannes are some of the best riders in the world, and they were wonderful to work and ride with! We did 4 on the wall here - and we all went up at the same time! What a rush! -sam

The Motorellos todeswand (GERMANY)

When I was riding in Germany, this was one of the other walls the Varanne Family took me to visit. The scenery and woodwork was beautiful, as most of the shows in Germany!  This was a small silo drome (one set of 90 degree walls). They had a great show also - including a midget car inside! The driver, Hugo Dabbert (2nd from left and driving below), was bouncing the wheels, first off of the cable at the top, and then off of the tracks at the bottom, while the girl (Laila - now Laila Dabbert!)) did graceful posing! It for-sure got your blood pumping!  (Thanks, Laila, for emailing me and giving me your information! I would love to come over and visit again! -sam)

 Mario Bettoschi’s Wall (ITALY)

Mario Bettoschi

Sadly, this is the only pic I have of Mario’s Wall. He passed away in 1993, a wonderful man who you will find on our, “In Memory of...” page. The fellow riding here is Gerard Varanne (Varanne brothers, France) when he was younger, learning trickriding. This is one of the few dromes I have been around with a painted riding surface - which can be a bit treacherous sometimes. Good for the sponsorship, though!. I believe Mario’s grandson has this Wall now. As usual if anyone has any info on this show - lease let me know, so I can add it to our site!

Speedy McNish’s Wall of Death (USA)

This wall was on Amusements of America Shows. It was one of the biggest silo dromes there was, with the walls 16 ft. high! I don’t know if this wall exists any more - I kinda think not. The folks in the pic are Josephine - Speedy’s wife, who rode the gocart then... and Ronnie McNish, Speedy’s son, forman & trickrider, who was the best young rider of his time! Ronnie’s name is now on the Vietnam War Memorial Wall. .He was a great trickrider and an awsome guy. The sport lost an irreplaceable talent when he went to Vietnam... from which it has only just begun to recover.
